Obituary

Valerie "Val" Duwenhoegger passed away on February 04, 2023 surrounded by all those that loved her. Born on August 20th, 1949, Val spent 73 magnificent years spreading joy to any and all around her. As the oldest child of five, she was the protector of all of her siblings.  Valerie had a love for horses and even bought her own horse named Fritz in the 8th grade. She spent her entire life in her beloved Black Hills, a community she was happy to call home.

On the 4th of July 1972, she went on her first date with Joe, the love of her life. They spent 51 wonderful years together, where they also went on to raise four beautiful children: Raquel, Cliff, Clint, and Garrett. Little did she know this was the beginning of a large, sprawling family -- something that gave her much joy in life. She would make sure to be at any sporting event, birthday party, graduation, and made all of her family feel well taken care of and loved.

Later in life, Val enjoyed traveling, taking any opportunity she could to horseback ride, camping in the hills, fishing at the lakes, and most of all; talking on the phone with her loved ones. A beautiful, warm-hearted, and caring woman until the very end, rest in peace.

She is survived by her husband Carl (Joe) Duwenhoegger, brothers Randy Madsen and Marty Madsen, sisters Dawn Wood and Ellen Votroubek, children Raquel Brubaker, Cliff Janis, Clint Janis, and Garrett Duwenhoegger, her 10 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents Don Madsen and Glenys Gerlach.

A viewing is to be held at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City, SD from 5:00 -6:30 PM on Thursday February 9th, 2023 with a Sharing Time Service held at 6:30 pm.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at the same location, Friday February 10th, 2023 at 10:00 am with burial immediately following at Black Hills National Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Coyote Den, Camp Rapid.

In lieu of flowers, our family requests donations be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that meant a lot to our beloved Val.
