Obituary

Hill City - Velda M. Schriner, 84, Rapid City, died Monday, June 13, 2011 at Theres A Heart Assisted Living. She was born July 25, 1926 at Deerfield. As a young girl she was raised on the Gillette Prairie near Deerfield Lake. She graduated from Rapid City Central High School. On August 4, 1944, she married Lester E. Schriner in Rapid City. Lester and Velda raised six children, 22 foster children and were awarded the foster parents of the year award in South Dakota in the late 1960s. She later pursued a career in food service, starting out at West Junior High School and later retiring after 25 years as Manager of Food Services at North Junior High. After the 1972 Flood, they relocated to Hill City where they both enjoyed retirement. Velda enjoyed baking and cooking for community functions. She was a member of the Toast Mistress along with American Business Women Association (ABWA), as well as the Modern Woodman Association and VFW. She enjoyed being an active member of the Assembly of God Church in Hill City. Survivors include two sons, Lester E. Sonny (Mary) Schriner Jr., Hill City, and Jacob E. Schriner, Pueblo, Colo.; four daughters, Kandus (Bill) Turner and Cheryl Barlow, both of Hill City, Debra (Richard) Prillaman, Martinsville Va., and Leslie (Gary) Pike, Pueblo, Colo.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Butler, San Juan, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, June 17, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Hill City with the Rev. Brian Anderson officiating. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. The family has set up memorial fund at the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Hill City.
