Vera Louise (Hawman) Downes, of Rapid City, SD, was surrounded by her loving family as she was called to her heavenly home by God on June 28, 2022.

Vera was born October 9, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan to Ruth (Arbiter) and Charles Hawman.  She had a younger brother, John (Karen) Hawman.  As a child she enjoyed trips to the beach with her family Vera's incredible gift of artistic talent was discovered at a young age.  She majored in Art at her Michigan School.  She continued to draw and paint in oils to share her talent throughout her life.

Vera and her beloved husband Dennis (Denzil) Downes experienced an extraordinary love story for over 67 years.  Together they had three children.  Dennis Andrew (born into Heaven), Michael Charles Downes and Denise Ann (Patrick) Dowling.  Vera was a loving and nurturing mother.  She and Dennis raised two of their grandsons with the same loving care.

Vera was a caretaker for many children.  She had five grandchildren; Alicia Dowling, Jacob Dowling, Nicholas Dowling, Timothy Downes and Bradley Downes.  Vera had nineteen great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.

Vera and her devoted husband Dennis traveled the world together.  Visits to Africa, Japan and other distant travels as well as van camping throughout the U.S. were enjoyed as they adventured together.

Vera was an active member of FUMC for 35 years.  At one time she served as President of the FUMC Women and enjoyed gatherings with Home Extension.

Vera was so very loved by her family and friends.  Her kind heart, sweet demeanor, nurturing spirit and beautiful laugh will forever be missed by all those whose lives she touched.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at 10:00 am.  A lunch will follow at First United Methodist Church at 629 Kansas City, Rapid City, SD.
