Obituary

RAPID CITY--Vincent J. Baumgartner, 76, of Rapid City, peacefully crossed the bar on Thursday, December 17, 2009, in his home. Born in Rapid City on December 20, 1932, to Albert and Eleanor (Bender) Baumgartner, Vincents roots remained in the area. He attended Cathedral High School and the School of Mines and Technology. He married his high school sweetheart, Gail I. Morris on September 26, 1953. His keen problem solving skills were honed daily by his electrical contracting business, the ranch near Rockerville, and especially his seven children. His many adventures included serving in the Air Force at St. Louis University. He was also a Second Class Electricians Mate in the Coast Guard serving on the USCG Chautauqua and USCG Magnolia. He served his community by involvement in Rotary for over 50 years and was on the StoryBook Island board of directors. He was involved with the Boys Club, South Dakota Children Home Society, Mount Rushmore National Memorial Society, National Electrical Contractor Association, and was a tutor for the Career Learning Center GED program. He was the five-time recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award, Person of the Year, Rotary District Governor and numerous awards and certificates. Preceding him in death were his wife, Gail Baumgartner and son, Patrick Baumgartner. Family include: Michael Baumgartner (Minot, ND), his children Erik, Anna Marie, Nicholas, and Jean Baptiste, Kevin & Shannon Baumgartner (Rapid City), Geralyn & Rick Lockstein (Canada), their son Brian, Anna & Rock Sumner (Omaha, NE), their children Scott and Emily, Teresa & Mike Stonum (Rapid City), their sons Kyle, Keith, and Dakota; Tim & Deanna Baumgartner (Rapid City), their sons Seth and Jake; Shawn & Kathy Baumgartner (Gering, NE), their children Alicia, Conner, and Melissa. His sisters are: Sister Aline Baumgartner, Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Minneapolis, MN), Ahne Serie (Waseca, MN) and Susan Whitmore (Phoenix, AZ). Visitation will be on Monday, Dec. 21, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a Christian wake service and rosary at 7:00 p.m., at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Immaculate Conception Church, at 5th and South Streets, with Father Ed Vanorny presiding. Pallbearers will be Vincents grandchildren. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, at 5th Street and Cathedral Drive. Private burial will be later in the week. The family suggests memorials being sent in Vincents honor to Hospice of the Hills.
