Obituary

RAPID CITY | Vincent M. Seaman, 83, passed away on July 10, 2017, at home surrounded by his family.

Vince was born (with his twin brother) on May 3, 1934, in Doland, SD, to Chester and Lois Seaman, the youngest of 10 children. He grew up in Doland South Dakota where he hunted, fished and sledded on Seaman Hill with a great group of friends that he hunted with his entire life. During high school he earned 11 high school varsity letters, in football, basketball and track-and-field, and was quarterback of the football team in his senior year.

Vince's pride and joy was his family. He married Clarice Hausvik in 1959 and they had three children, and four grandchildren. He fulfilled his life goal of seeing all three of his children graduate from college.

Upon graduation from high school he began his 33-year career with the Soil Conservation Service (NRCS), interrupted by his service in the US Army from 1956 to 1958, where he was stationed in Munich Germany in the 7th Army. Throughout his career he worked with farmers and ranchers across South Dakota. Vince designed and oversaw the construction of rural pipe lines, center pivot irrigation systems, stock dams, and water spreading projects. Vince worked in Doland, Clark, Bison, Vermillion, Beresford and Watertown before moving to Rapid City in 1970. After the 1972 Flood he oversaw the floodway cleanup and reseeding in both Rapid City and Spearfish. Vince capped his career as President of the SD Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society in 1988, then retired in 1989.

Vince was active in the Elks Lodge in Rapid City, serving on the Board of Directors and was named Elk of the Year in 1987. From 1990 to 1995, he started his second career and dream job of managing the Pro Shop of the Elks Golf Course, where he made countless additional friends. Vince was the driving force behind the vision and leadership for the completion of the Elks Golf Course back nine. He was proud to have served on the design team for the back nine.

Vince was active throughout his life and enjoyed many activities until late in his life, spending 27 winters in Mesa, AZ, enjoying the warm weather, time with his wife of 58 years and his friends. Vince was an active Shriner and drove children from Rapid City to the Shriner Hospital in Minneapolis as well as helping raise funds for the Shriner Hospital for Crippled Children in Mesa. He was also a mentor in the Rapid City SCORE program and competed in and served on the board of the Rapid City Senior Games.

Most of all Vince enjoyed spending time with his family. He passed on his active lifestyle to his family teaching them to golf, hunt, fish, play tennis as well as both snow and water ski. Vince's grandchildren were the joy of his life, he spent countless hours playing with them and cheering them on in their various activities. Vince lived life to the fullest, he was happiest when he was doing something, fixing something or helping someone.

He is survived by his wife, Clarice; son, Kevin (Wendy); son, Todd (Lisa); daughter, Lisa (Kurt) Anderson; and four grandchildren, Danny (Brittany), Lindsey (Caleb) Hansen, Dylan and Payton Anderson. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and four sisters.
