Obituary

RAPID CITYViola K. Smolik, 93, passed away at Fountain Springs Healthcare on Sunday, November 9, 2008. Viola Alley was born on April 7, 1915, in Orient, to John and Catherine (Anglin) Alley. She grew up in the Firesteel and Isabel areas. Viola went to graduate from nurses training at the Sisters Hospital in Hot Springs and was later united in marriage to Anton Tony Smolik. The couple made their home in Rapid City, and when her kids were old enough, Viola started at work at St. Johns Hospital in 1957. She worked for many years there in the newborn nursery, and retired in 1980. Viola loved to dance and play bridge. She was a member of the Minneluzahan and Canyon Lake Senior Centers, Cathedral Parish, Catholic Daughters, and was a charter member of Elks Does Drove in Rapid City. Viola was a wonderful mother and taught her children the values of life; hard work and family. She is survived by her children; Joan Smolik and Barb (Ed) Lee, all of Rapid City; Lynne (Carl) Rose, Brookings, Shary Bozied, Seattle, WA; Jim (Anne) Smolik, Brookings and John Jack (Roberta) Alley, Seattle; 2 brothers, Maurice (Madonna) and Bill Alley, all of Isabel; a sister, Marge (Addie) Beer, Isabel; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Tony in 1993, an infant son Joseph in 1951, 4 brothers, 2 sisters and 4 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 5 until 7 p.m., with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Immaculate Conception Church (5th & South Streets) with Father Michel Mulloy presiding. Burial will follow in Pine Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the St. Martin Monastery Viola Smolik Memorial, 2110C St. Martin Dr. Rapid City, SD 57702.
