Rapid City – Violet "Vi" Joan Pietz, 94, died Monday, October 16, 2023, at the Monument Health Home Plus Hospice House in Rapid City.

Violet Joan Hauck was born July 29, 1929, in Leola SD to Jacob and Lydia Hauck. She attended rural school and worked on the family farm in Leola. She met the love of her life, Melvin John Pietz and they were married on July 30, 1950. They lived in Aberdeen, SD, Saint Paul, MN, and Sioux Falls, SD. They had four children, Robert Melvin, Bonnie Belinda, Richard Lee, and Thomas Jacob.

After Melvin retired from the post office in 1983, they moved to Rapid City, SD and built a home by Johnson Siding.

Grateful for having shared her life, are her four children, Robert (until February 12, 2023), Bonnie (Jim) Horan, Rapid City, Richard (Brian Jorgensen), Minneapolis, MN; Thomas (DeeAnna), Rapid City, four grandchildren; Tiffany (great granddaughter Harper "Lee"), Travis (Maria), Steven and Michelle, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and her sister, Bernice Fuehrer, Rapid City.

Violet (dearly known as "Vi") was a wonderful hard-working woman that was deeply respected and admired by everyone for her hard-working attitude, determination, and her "spunk". She was a truly wonderful mother and a dearly loved grandma.  She never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion for anyone. You could always expect a card and a call on your special day!

Her spare time was filled with gardening, planting flowers, making cookies, putting puzzles together, and making meals and entertaining her family were her greatest joy.

She will be greatly missed by all the people's lives she touched, especially her family.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Pietz, her son Robert Pietz, her parents and three brothers.

Her visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:00 am Monday, October 23, 2023, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.

Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be 10:00 am Monday, October 23, 2023, at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at 12:00 noon at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis and she will be interred with her husband Melvin Pietz.
