Obituary

NEW UNDERWOOD- Walter Walker Green, III, 86, of New Underwood, died at his home on Wednesday, March 18, 2015. Walter Walker Green III was born June 28, 1928 in Eufaula, Alabama to Walter and Alma (Bailey) Green. Walter graduated from George Town, Georgia. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in June of 1946 and his first assignment was at Rapid City Air Base. Walter enjoyed playing basketball and the love of the game brought him to meet his future wife. Walter married Marilu Gregson on August 12, 1950 in New Underwood. They were married for 52 ½ years. He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force after over 30 years of service. Walter lived in New Underwood for 65 years except when he was stationed overseas and elsewhere other than Ellsworth Air Force Base. He was a lifetime member of the Retired Enlisted Association, lifetime member of the Armed Forces Top Enlisted Association; lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member, past Post Commander of American Legion Post #256; past County Commander of Pennington County and past District Commander of the American Legion; and was a charter member of the New Underwood Lions Club since 1964. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, sports events, traveling and visiting with family and friends. Grateful for sharing his loving life are his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Walter is survived by his three sons: Walter (Alona) Green, Clark, MO; John (Kitty Brahler) Green, New Underwood; Michael (Venessa) Green, Sturgis; four daughters: Marilu (Roger) Niederwerder, Sturgis; Patty Nelsen, New Underwood; Dorothy (Don) Berg, Alliance, NE; Elizabeth (Craig) Wagner, Clark, MO; his daughter in law, Tammy Green, Wasta; his brothers; Hugh (Shirley) Green, Ferrum, VA, Charles Edwin (Retha Fran) Green, Bayou George, FL; James (Darnell) Green, Roanoke, VA; sisters: Juanita Dickerson, Marietta, GA; Mary Elizabeth Green, Alford, FL; Alice (Jim) Gay, Bayou George, FL, 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Alma Green; wife, Marilu; son, Glenn; brother, Arthur; sister, Gloria Jean Green; and brother in law, William Dickerson. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, March 23 at the New Underwood Community Church in New Underwood with Pastor Wes Wileman officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the Ellsworth Air Force Base Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the New Underwood Lions Club.
