Rapid City – Waonsilawin "Cindy" Gillis, 48, died and entered the spirit world on Friday, February 18, 2021 at the Monument Health Rapid City Hospital.
Waonsilawin Cindy White Bull was born October 12, 1973 in Fresno, California to Mark and Patricia (Lorreto) White Bull Sr.
She attended school in Albuquerque, NM and then the family moved to Ft. Yates and graduated from Standing Rock Community High School in 1992. She then entered the United States Marine Corps on August 25, 1992. While in the service she received the Rifle Expert Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Certificate of Commendation, and Good Conduct Medal. Cindy was honorably discharged on May 27, 1996.
She then attended University of North Carolina-Wilmington and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Studies. She then attended University of North Dakota-Grand Forks and received her Doctorate Degree in Law in 2004.
Cindy married Dean Iron Eyes Gillis on December 24, 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
She then began her employment with Mario Gonzalez Law Firm in Rapid City, SD. She also became the Chief Prosecutor at Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Court before returning back to Gonzalez Law Firm where she was employed at her death.
Cindy was very loyal to protecting native customs, traditions, and cultures. She loved being a mom and was an avid fan of the Las Vegas Raiders football team, thus her favorite colors were black and silver.
Survivors include her husband: Dean Gillis of Black Hawk; four daughters: Christina Boyer of Orlando, FL, Michelle Boyer of Orlando, FL, Justice Gillis of Minot, ND, and Evelynn Gillis of Black Hawk; one son Elliott (Jade) Gillis of Deer Lake, MN; two grandchildren; four brothers: Jesse White Bull of Kennel, SD, Mark White Bull Jr. of Rapid City, SD, Ohitika Wise Spirit of Pierre, SD and Ambleza Wise Spirit of Pierre, SD; and three sisters: Florise White Bull of Kennel, SD, Rhonda Gonzales and Priscilla Gonzales both of Albuquerque, NM.
Cindy was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Celebration of Life Funeral Service at 11:00 am at the funeral home.
Burial will be at 2:00 pm at Black Hills National Cemetery.
