Obituary

Wayne Lyle Leberknight, 75, of Rapid City, died at Golden Living Center-Black Hills, on Monday, January 4, 2016.

Wayne was born August 16, 1940.  He lived in the Rapid City area his entire life.  For over 20 years, he waged a brave, hard-fought battle against multiple sclerosis, until January 4, 2016.  He never let it get the best of him and enjoyed these years with his wife, kids, grandkids and friends.

Wayne was born in Rapid City, went to school and lived most of his life out on Sheridan Lake Road.  On February 4, 1967, in Huron, SD, Wayne married Alice (Steever) Leberknight, and they were blessed with four awesome children, Lesa, Marty, Michael and Kady.  After high school, Wayne worked in the construction business until retiring in the early 1990s.  He never had formal training but elevated to supervisor status on many of Rapid City's major building projects, like the Stevens High School gymnasium, the Prairie States Life building, the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center addition, and many others.  He most enjoyed spending time with his family in the Black Hills, especially fishing, hunting, camping and playing cards.  His family especially enjoyed his entertaining sense of humor.

Wayne will be greatly missed by his family which includes his wife, Alice L. Leberknight; two brothers, James (Mary) Leberknight of Idaho Falls, ID, and Gary Leberknight of Camarillo, CA; two sisters, Fern Marlow of Tacoma, WA, and Doris Macdonald of Rapid City, SD; four children, Lesa (Art) Koscielski, Marty (Jill) Leberknight, Michael (Jeni) Leberknight, and Kady (Mike) Schmitz, all of Rapid City, SD; grandchildren Taylor Hagel, Riley Hagel, Ashley Hagel, Tristen Leberknight, Owen Leberknight, Hunter Leberknight, Annie Leberknight, Megan Hagel, Jordan Hagel, Brettly Schmitz, James Schmitz, Alivia Mitzel, Brett (Heather) Grosz, Drew (Linnea) Grosz, Brady Wauer, and Nick Koscielski; great-grandchildren Teegan Grosz, Maddie Grosz, and Theo Grosz; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Ken and Helen Leberknight, his brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Ilene Leberknight, and his brother-in-law, Homer Marlow.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 11, 2016, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Fr. Bill Zandri officiating.   The service will be followed by pie and coffee at the funeral home.
