Obituary

Wesley L. Scholl, 95, died Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Fountain Springs Healthcare Center in Rapid City.

Wesley (Wes) Leo Scholl was born in Madison, South Dakota on July 27, 1927 to Fredrick and Johanna Scholl. He was raised at their farmhouse on the south shores of Lake Herman. He attended Beadle School in Madison.

At the age of 17, the year of 1944, Wes joined the US Maritime Service. He took the local train from Madison to Sheepshead Bay, in Brooklyn New York. He was paid $3 a day for room, board and meals. After basic training he went to serve for the Merchant Marines and was a 1 st Class Seaman on the USS Seminole out of Charleston, South Carolina. The USS Seminole was a Hospital Ship which transported troops to and from Italy to South Carolina.  At the end of WWII he signed up for another two years of service. He was given leave of 30 days once a year in which he went home to spend time with his family and worked.

In 1950 while serving in the Merchant Marines he was drafted by the Army. His orders were to go to San Francisco and then he was transferred to Colorado Springs, Colorado for boot camp training.  After basic training he returned to San Francisco where he boarded ship to await assignments.

He was assigned as an Assistant Cook for several supply ships and then was assigned to Pearl Harbor after the bombing to assist with cleanup and supply meals to the crew and servicemen. He spent time between Pearl Harbor and Midway Island serving his country. He then returned to San Francisco for a short period of time before heading to Okinawa, where they transferred troops to and from Shanghai for service.

In 1949, Wes was transferred to the Army Base in Whittier, Alaska. He continued to be an Assistant Cook and worked at the NCO Club at night as a Bartender. He was discharged when he was 25 from Camp McCoy in La Croix, Wisconsin. He returned to Madison, and worked for Art's City Services where he met Shirley Junker who had worked across the street at the Bowling Alley lunch counter.

Then in 1953 Wes moved to Rapid City, SD and at the same time helped Shirley and her friends move there also. He worked for BCY Incorporated as a maintenance man. On September 11 th , 1955 Wes and Shirley were married in the Lutheran Church at Oldham, SD.

In 1960 he started Mobil Fix It, a mobile service truck performing home maintenance and repair. Two years later, in 1962 the name changed to Scholl Construction and then in 1964 to Scholl Plumbing & Heating, which is currently still in operation as Scholl Plumbing & Heating, Inc.

Wes was very involved with the Loyal Order of the Moose. He joined in 1955 and is a lifetime member. He was elected and held offices in both South Dakota and North Dakota, including Governor, Treasurer, District 2 President, Bi-State President, and Finance Chairman. During his years of service he was the Drug Awareness Coordinator for three years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 22.

Wes retired in 1999, yet stayed involved in the business while his son managed the family business.

Wes and Shirley called Fountain Springs Health Care Center in Rapid City their home for past ten years and considered the staff his second family.

Wes' hobbies included camping and fishing with the family, going to the car races, and attending the Moose Conventions in North Dakota & South Dakota

He is preceded in death by: his parents, Fred Scholl and Johanna Scholl (Rittel); and his siblings, Oliver, Herbert, Rudy, Ann Neville, Adeline Neville, Leona Becker and Iola Robson.

He is survived by; his loving wife Shirley (Junker), his children; Dennis of Rapid City, Tim (Noreen) of Rapid City, Judy (Ramon Thomas) Morgan of Tucson, AZ and Bonnie (Kevin) Hahn of Sheridan, WY; his  grandchildren, Jessica, Jamie, Alyssa, Jaclyn, Cody, Kylee, and Haley; six Great Grandchildren; and his siblings, Lorene Erickson of Canistota, SD and JoAnn Hoines of Aberdeen, SD.

Public Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday, January 5, 2023 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Boulevard, Rapid City, with a Moose Lodge Memorial Service at the funeral home at 6:00 pm.

Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be 10:00 am Friday, January 6, at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery in Rapid City, with full military honors.

A luncheon will follow the burial at the Moose Lodge, 814 E St Patrick Street.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial can be made to Loyal Order of Moose-Rapid City Lodge #1137.
