Obituary

RAPID CITY - On the morning of Wednesday, October 4, 2023, Wesley John Storm of Rapid City, peacefully passed away at his home surrounded by his son, daughter and wife.

Wes was born on February 23, 1936, in Mitchell, SD to John Storm and Olga (Rongstad) Storm.  He grew up on a farm north of Mitchell with his dog Laddie and two older sisters.  He attended a country school at Plano finishing 8th grade there.  Then his parents sold the farm and moved to Rapid City, where his Dad built a home at 302 Columbus.  He only had a few blocks to walk to his beloved Rapid City High.  He played football for Euc Cobb and the drums in the high school band for Duane Johnson.

He enjoyed every aspect of RCHS.  After graduation in 1954, he attended Black Hill Teachers College earning a degree in education in 1958.  While attending Black Hills, he played baseball for Coach Cliff Papick. He met his future wife, Gladys Stensaas, at the college library getting help an English Classes.  They were married in 1958 shortly after graduation and spent 65 wonderful years together.

Wes was employed by the RCAS for 40 years.  Starting as an elementary Health and PE teacher, moving to South Junior High when it opened, then to Central High, next to Director of Health and PE for the School District and City Recreation Director combined, then Activities Director at Stevens and finally to his dream job as Principal of West Middle School where he loved that age student and had the best staff in the state.  When he retired, he wasn't done yet, he ran for the school board and served two terms.  Wes received many awards and honors, but his best reward was serving the youth of Rapid City---he loved Rapid City!

A special part of Wes's life was coaching Post 22 to its first state championship in 1961 and followed by more state championships in 1962 and 1963.

Wes is survived by his wife Gladys, son Shad and wife Lori, and daughter Kara; also seven grandchildren and four great granddaughters.
