William “Bill” James McKelvey, 78, passed away on June 5, 2026.

Bill was born on May 5, 1948, in Paterson, New Jersey. He later made his home in Rapid City, South Dakota, where he spent many years building a life rooted in faith, family, and service.

A proud patriot, Bill served honorably in the United States Air Force for 21 years, retiring with the rank of Technical Sergeant. His military career reflected the values that defined his life—dedication, integrity, and a commitment to serving others.

Bill also had a lifelong passion for weightlifting. What began as a hobby in his teenage years became a pursuit he carried throughout his life. He was an avid lifter for decades, continually challenging himself and encouraging others along the way.  His hard work and determination led him to set state records in weightlifting, an accomplishment of which he was quietly proud. The discipline and perseverance he brought to the sport reflected the same strength of character he carried into every aspect of his life.

Bill was a lifelong Christian whose faith was the foundation of his life. He found strength and guidance in his relationship with God and sought to live out his faith through kindness, generosity, and service to those around him.

Above all, Bill was devoted to his family. He is survived by his children, David McKelvey, Eden McKelvey-Redden, Skye McKelvey, Joshua McKelvey, and Heather Daly, as well as his beloved grandchildren.

Those who knew Bill will remember his generous heart and his willingness to help anyone in need. He was known for putting others before himself and never hesitated to lend a hand when someone needed support. He could be stubborn at times—a trait that those who loved him knew well—but it was often matched by a deep sense of loyalty and determination. One of the many ways he showed his love was by making sure everyone was fed- it was his way of welcoming people, caring for them, and showing them they mattered.

Bill leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, generosity, and love. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but they take comfort in the memories they shared and in the promise of eternal life through Christ.

A visitation and funeral service in honor of Bill’s life will be held at Rock Point Church, located at 1213 Harmony Heights Lane, Rapid City, SD 57701. The visitation will begin at 9:30am on June 16, 2026, followed by the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Those who wish to pay their respects may join his family and friends as they celebrate his life and legacy. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery, 20901 Pleasant Valley Dr, Sturgis, SD 57785, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
