Obituary

BLACK HAWK- William T. "Bill" Bittner, 81, died Monday, May 26, 2014 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Bill was born July 9, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA to Charles and Jeanette (Delahunty) Bittner. He attended Catholic grade schools, one year at a Catholic high school and one year at a public high school. Bill worked for two years before joining the military. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force on December 13, 1954 as Sergeant he began working for a few years for Honeywell in Minneapolis. He also attended night classes to graduate high school. After earning his high school diploma, Bill went on to a Private Technical School for refrigeration where he worked for 20 years in Philadelphia; retiring in 1980. He worked on Independence Hall, Betsy Ross' House, and many historic sites. He married Betty J. Hall on Valentine's Day in 1959 in Philadelphia. To this union, two sons: William T. Bittner, Jr. and Joseph R. Bittner were born. Bill and Betty moved to the Black Hills in 2004. His hobbies included old cars, model trains, and garage sales. He was a member of the Piedmont American Legion. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Jane Quinn, Catherine DeMuro, and Dorothy Rasuiel; and three brothers: Charles, John and Joseph. He is survived by his wife, Betty, Black Hawk; two sons: William Bittner, Jr., Tuckerton, NJ; Joseph (Cindee) Bittner, Rapid City; two sisters: Frances Williams, Philadelphia, PA; Margaret Pawlishyn, Roslyn, PA; and three grandchildren: CJ, Kellan, and Brendan. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 29, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Rev. Karl Kroger officiating. Visitation will be for one and a half hours before services. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors rendered by the Piedmont Valley Post 311 and the South Dakota Army National Guard. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at the Humane Society of the Black Hills.
