Obituary

William H. "Buck" Anderson, 90, Rapid City, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2015 at his residence. William was born at Dubuque, Iowa on Feb. 20, 1925. His father, William Boland, was a full blooded Irishman with blarney charm which aided him as a successful men's wear salesman. Buck's father was killed in an auto accident when Buck was two years old. William's family moved to Britton, S. Dak., where his mother, Tay (McLaughlin) Boland was from. The McLaughlin's were a large Scotch-Irish Clan. When William was in the second grade, his mother married Claude C. Anderson and William then became William Anderson. The family moved to Lead, S. Dak. and in 1937 they moved to Rapid City. Rapid City has been his home since that time. Buck graduated from Rapid City High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Amphibious Forces. He participated in numerous Pacific invasions. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended and graduated from the University of S. Dak. in Vermillion. While at the University, he met the love of his life, Jane Buntley. They were married in 1949 at Sioux City, Iowa. The couple moved to Rapid City where he was involved in the Insurance Business for the next 40 years. Buck was an avid golfer; he loved his navy Reunion trips, his trips to Hawaii and Arizona. He was especially fond of attending and supporting his kids in their various activities. Buck lived a wonderful life and left his smile and good nature on everyone he met. He will be missed by all who ever met or knew him. He was a former member of the Rotary Club, a past president of the Rapid City Insurance Association, a member of the American Legion, a Life Member of the Elks and the VFW and a member of the Navy Landing Craft Association. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church where he had served as a Deacon for twenty years and a Trustee for six years. William is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Jane Anderson, his children, Scott (Judi) Anderson, Martha Tay (Scott) Leech and Brad "Bucky" Anderson; his grandchildren, Nate (Katie), Nick (Steph, Nowlin (Stef), Nash (Krista), Mike Emily) and Makayla; seven great grandchildren and a nephew, Hal Buntley and a niece, Carla Green. Memorial services will be at 10:00 AM Friday, June 19th, at the First Congregational Church with Rev. Ted Huffman officiating. Inurnment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the US Navy. A memorial has been established for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dept. of South Dakota, P.O. Box 2816, Sioux Falls, S./ Dak. 57101-2816.
