Rapid City - William (Bill) Shroll passed away on March 11, 2026. Services will be held at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with visitation on Sunday, March 22 from 4-6 pm, and funeral service Monday, March 23 at 10:30 am. Burial will follow immediately at Mountain View Cemetery at Rapid City.
William (Bill) Shroll was born on Feb. 19th, 1958, in Huron South Dakota to proud parents, Jerome (Bernie) Shroll and Audrey (Joens) Shroll, and big sisters Victoria (Leonard) Shroll and Cynthia (Angel) Shroll. Bill spent his early years in Sioux City Iowa and moved to Rapid City when he was in 2nd grade. Bill spent his early years attending school, playing army and sports with his childhood friends, Jim, Eddie and Pat Hubbling. Playing sports, drums, and taking rides in the hills were passions that continued throughout his life. Bill loved his parents and was a doting little brother. Bill loved his mom and especially enjoyed her cookies and rides in the hills. He attributes his sense of humor to his dad and recalled often how his dad surprised him with his dream car, (mustang) for his birthday. He loved his sisters and looked to them for guidance and friendship throughout his entire life. Bill credits them with his negotiation skills as well as his love for garden fresh produce, Santas Whiskers, and the Beatles.
Bill graduated from Stevens High School and went on to earn his BA and master’s degrees in secondary education and his specialist degree in school administration. Bill married his lifelong partner, Linda (Shreeve) Shroll in 1980 and became the proud father to Amie (Shaun) Skinner, James (Marcy)Shroll, and Dylan (Carrie) Shroll. Bill (William J) to Linda enjoyed playing with Sadie, taking hikes, driving through the hills, attending movies, and enjoying Saturday morning coffee and doughnuts. Bills children and grandchildren were a source of immense pride to Bill and he tried hard to find ways to connect with them, sports, politics, music, literature and whatever interested them at the moment. He proudly followed their careers and encouraged education. Bill repeatedly said his kids were his biggest success! His eyes would light up when he would wear his My Daughter is a nurse shirt, or when he’d sit in church and say, “I’m Bill, Pastors Dad, or when someone would need help with something technological, Bill would say, “Oh, let me ask Dylan. Dylan’s an expert at that.” Whatever it was, Bill loved his children! Papa Bill was the proud grandpa to 7 grandchildren, Brandon (Kassandra) Williams, Jaden Shroll, Logan Williams, Jimmy Shroll, Kaylee (Sebastian) Williams, Jonah Shroll, Jude Shroll and great grandson Russell Williams. Bill loved his grandchildren without hesitation. They were his pride and joy and hope for the future. Bill has 2 nephews, Ryan (Anne) Leonard and David Angel, and two nieces (Melanie (Ben) Schumaker and Jennifer (Chris) Flood. Bill often spoke if becoming an uncle at 16 and how much he enjoyed that special role. Playing sports, drums, and providing positive interactions with children, students, and staff, coupled with taking rides in the hills were passions that continued throughout his life. Bill was especially proud of his time spent at Crow Creek Tribal Schools where he served as teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent. Bill never forgot his students, or his friend and mentor, Cody Russell, and continued to follow and cheer for them from the sidelines. Bill continued his love for providing positive experiences for children and adults during his retirement years where he volunteered as a Foster Grandparent along with providing friendship and support to his many friends at West Park Apartments. Bill struggled with addiction and mental illness and was active members of both AA and NAMI, where he worked hard to reduce the stigma and provide support for others. Bill was often quoted as saying, “If I had diabetes, instead of a mental illness, people would treat me better. Let’s work together to change that.” Bills last tribute to his desire to help others was becoming an organ donor. Bill’s gift will provide life for others, demonstrating his servitude, his kindness, and his love for others.
