William E Stevens,83, of Rapid City, SD died on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Bill was born in DeKalb, IL on April 5, 1925, the son of Jerre Stevens and Verna Fisk. He attended DeKalb Schools. He entered the armed service in the Fourth Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, B Troop of the1st Army in July 1943. He went overseas in 1944, received a Purple Heart for injuries suffered in battle near St Lo, France, and was kept as a prisoner of war at several Nazi-occupied hospitals. By 1945 he was returned to the United States and met his future wife Dorothy Pacha. They were married October 28, 1945. They lived their next 40 years in DeKalb where Bill was a partner in the electrical firm of Virgil Cook & Son, before retiring to Rapid City, SD in 1982. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Elks, and the IBEW. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, his son Jerre Stevens and wife Sarah of Sandwich, IL, his sister Shirley Munson of DeKalb, IL, nephew Craig Munson of DeKalb, IL, and nice Karen Thomas of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents. Graveside service will be at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb, IL on Monday, September 8th, 2008, under the direction of Anderson Funeral home. Donations to the Disabled American Veterans in his name will be accepted by Osheim & Schmidt Funeral in Rapid City Home or the Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.
