Obituary

Charles (Charlie) Clayton Britton 82 of Rapid City passed away Friday, February 21, 2020 at Clarkson Care Center.

A celebration of Life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City in the summer of 2020.

Charles was born July 26, 1937 in Gothenburg, Nebraska to Clayton Britton and Rosemary Crampton. He moved to Omaha as a boy with his mother and stepfather, Clifford Truesdell. In 1949 they moved to Broken Bow. In 1953 he got Polo as was told he would never walk again but proved the Dr's wrong. After graduation in 1955 the family moved to Rapid City and opened the American Furniture store and Red Barn Furniture store. He worked at both stores while attending the Rapid City Business School. He moved to Las Vegas in 1959 and worked for the Del Webb Corporation for 13 years starting at the Mint Casino then for the Sahara Hotel. He met his first wife, Thelma, while at the Mint. They married in 1961 and had two daughters Andrea and Charlene. He opened a furniture store, Hi-Way Furniture in Henderson, Nevada in 1969. In 1979 he sold the store and moved to Florida in 1980. There he worked for several different furniture stores. He also worked part time for the St. Pete Times for 17 years delivering papers. He divorced in 1986 and moved back to Rapid City in 2000 after retiring. He met and rekindled a relationship with a girlfriend from business school. He and Joann have been married since July 2003.

Charles enjoyed fishing, gardening, was an avid reader, and traveled extensively around the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Charles is survived by his wife Joann, daughters; Andrea (Michael) Hill of Las Vegas, Charlene (Drew) Cheney of Virginia, stepchildren; Renee (Randy) Kienitz of Phoenix, Crystal (Boyfriend Randi Miller) Geyer of Rapid City, Scot (Deadra) Geyer of Edgemont, brothers; Bob (Clydene), Dave (Konnie), Larry and Mike Britton, 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters; Pat, Barbara, Jan and Lisa, brother; Ed, stepdaughter; Brenda, and great-granddaughter Layla.
